AI / ML Engineer

About the role
Most enterprise AI work stalls in the same place: the pilot is impressive, and then nobody can make it reliable enough to depend on. The interesting engineering is on the far side of that gap, and that is where this role sits.
You will build retrieval pipelines over messy client data, design agent workflows with sensible guardrails, and — critically — build the evaluation harness that tells you whether a change made things better or just different.
We are honest with clients about where AI helps and where a well-written rule is cheaper and more reliable. You will need to be comfortable making that call and defending it.
What you'll do
- Build retrieval and RAG pipelines over client data, including the unglamorous ingestion work
- Design agent and automation workflows with guardrails, fallbacks and human review
- Build evaluation harnesses so quality is measured rather than asserted
- Integrate model APIs and open models into existing production systems
- Advise clients on where AI genuinely helps — and where it does not
What we're looking for
- Four or more years in software engineering, with at least one year shipping AI/ML features to production
- Strong Python; comfortable in TypeScript for integration work
- Practical experience with LLM APIs, embeddings and vector search
- Understanding of evaluation, prompt design and where models fail
- Ability to explain a probabilistic system to a non-technical stakeholder
- Authorised to work in the United States without sponsorship
Nice to have
- Production agentic systems, not only single-turn calls
- MLOps — model serving, monitoring and drift detection
- Fine-tuning or serving open-weight models
- Published writing or open-source work in the space
